A new way of looking at S&P 500's P/E ratio
While macro economists typically take a top down approach in arriving at a P/E ratio for an index, the bottom-up approach of arriving at an index P/E ratio by aggregating data with regard to industry P/E is also quite prevalent. A study made by using last 50 years data suggests that the P/E of S&P 500 index is inversely related with the future Federal Government spending in the US.
