When common sense goes for a toss...

Here is today's recommended reading list from Equitymaster...

    The need to think differently
Investing from a long term perspective is an advantage in itself. Why? Because not many people do so! Given that retail investors rarely tend to have information that is not known by market participants, it barely gives them an advantage over others. However, thinking about how businesses might shape up over the long term is something that investors can take advantage of and pick stocks accordingly. Read on to know more about how else investors can benefit over the long run, by thinking differently. (GuruFocus)

When common sense goes for a toss...
...things go haywire. This is exactly what is happening to the political affairs of the world's largest economy. The shutdown of government is indication of a poor state of governance. Shockingly, the world's largest nation is failing in charting its priorities. While the repercussions of the same may not be alarming, such government action definitely undermines the creditworthiness of the United States of America...How and why, find out by reading the following interesting piece from 'The Economist'. (The Economist Newspaper Limited)

    The tough business of retail
The author discusses his thoughts on various topics including the importance of keeping investing themes simple as well as an insight on the retail business. His interesting take on the latter can make one wonder about how difficult business may be for a retail store operator. However, his view is more apt for developed part of the world. Still a while before India to reaches such a stage! (Oddball Stocks)

Has Greenblatt's magic formula worked in India?
Greenblatt's formula involves ranking a universe of stocks based on their return on capital and earnings multiples. Once the universe has been fixed, stocks in it are ranked on the basis of return on capital employed with the highest returning stock getting the first rank and the lowest returning the last rank. A research study done by Ambit Capital is highlighted in this page. The results, as expected, are in favour of the formula. (Valuewalk)

Does Buffet expect US government to increase debt?
Since the past few days, there has been debate going on between US political parties over raising the debt ceiling. In an interview on CNBC, Buffet said - "We will go right up to the point of extreme idiocy, but we won't cross it". Naturally, these lines were addressed to Congress... Read on to know more on Buffet's views on the same (Cable News Network)
