Core sector to be the focus area

The BJP led government seems to be stepping on the gas as far the growth of the economy is concerned. After having passed legislation pertaining to foreign exchange management, money laundering, insurance and derivatives, the government has now turned its focus on the core sector. This has been reported by a leading national daily.

The government is planning to give a big boost to the infrastructure sector. The first step in this regard is the speedy implementation of the east-west and north-south corridors projects. The government is also considering the setting up of a dedicated road fund for the purpose. Among the other measures likely to be considered are fiscal incentives for the steel industry in the form of higher anti dumping duties and a revival for Steel Authority of India (SAIL).

New policy measures for ports and civil aviation are also being firmed up. Plans are also being drawn up for the power generation and transmission sector.

The government's measures are directed in the right direction. A step up in the spending on infrastructure related projects will definitely go a long way in improving the prospects of the core sector industries. The move will help kick start a domestic economic recovery.
