According to newspaper reports, global conglomerate - General Electric (GE) is setting up a US$ 40 m (Rs 1.7 bn) research centre - 'GE India Technology Centre' at Bangalore. Phase I of this project is expected to be completed by September 2000.
GE plans to utilise the upcoming centre as a hub for Research & Development (R&D) for its global businesses. The centre will work in tandem with GE's corporate R&D centre in New York and will provide research, development and engineering support to GE's diverse global businesses.
The centre will recruit 500 research scientists specialising in chemical engineering, material and polymer sciences, IT, power electronics etc. These scientists will provide R&D support to GE in chemical process modelling, e-commerce analytics, financial services systems, image and signal processing among others.
The opening of the centre will be further testimony to India's emerging status as the 'economical brain centre'. GE has joined a growing band of MNC's who have recognised India's technical expertise. Recently, US auto major Ford announced plans to make India its global hub for engineering and designing. Moreover, the intellectual capital costs in India are low compared to western countries with similar experienced manpower.
