The month-on-month net inflows for equity mutual funds came down by 68% to Rs 64.8 billion (bn) in April 2023, as per the figures released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
According to experts, inflows for April were lower as there was no clear direction for retail investors to follow. Benchmark indices were rangebound. The other reason could be profit booking.
Many say that the inflows for May 2023 would be much higher than April 2023 as FIIs are coming back to India. This will boost retail investors' confidence.
Despite a steep fall in net inflows, the number of new systematic investment plans (SIPs) registered in April was 19,55,569.
The SIP assets under management (AUM) increased to Rs 7,171.8 bn in April from Rs 6,833 bn in March 2023.
A total of 9 open-ended new fund offers (NFOs) were floated which mobilised around Rs 18.3 bn.
In the equity mutual funds category, the bulk of the flows came into midcap and smallcap funds. Smallcap schemes saw inflows of Rs 21.8 bn while midcap funds saw Rs 17.9 bn worth inflows.
Inflows into largecap funds saw a steep decline to Rs 530 million (m) compared to Rs 9.1 bn in March 2023.
In the debt fund category, April 2023 saw a total inflow of Rs 1,066.7 bn against an outflow of Rs 568.8 bn in March 2023.
The index funds category saw inflows of Rs 1.5 bn.
