HPCL Backs Solar Drone Deeptech Innovation

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has signed an agreement with Maraal Aerospace, a deep-tech startup incubated at IIT Kanpur, during IEW 2026 in Goa on 29 January 2026. This partnership is an important step toward supporting clean energy and advanced aerospace technology in India.

Under HPCL's startup support program 'HP Udgam', the company will invest Rs 20 million (m) in Maraal Aerospace. The funding will help the startup speed up product development, testing, and validation so the technology can be launched and scaled faster.

Maraal Aerospace is building India's first solar-powered long-endurance drone using clean energy. The drone uses efficient aerodynamics and solar-assisted electric power. It can fly for up to 12 hours, cover 150 km one way, and operate at heights of up to 6 km above sea level, while keeping costs and logistics low.

This drone can be used for defence and important civilian purposes, such as border and coastal surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance missions, infrastructure inspection, and disaster response.

In the future, the company plans to develop a solar and hydrogen hybrid drone that can fly for 24 hours, and later a High-Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) platform capable of staying airborne for over 90 days.

Through this partnership, HPCL continues to support India's homegrown innovation in clean energy and advanced technology startups.
